2. Agricultural Bioinformatics Key Laboratory of Hubei Province

The laboratory was approved and established by Science and Technology Department of Hubei Province in 2013. Located in Block C, Yifu Building, Huazhong Agricultural University, No. 1 Shizishan Street, Hongshan District, Wuhan. It covers an area of 1,000 square meters, has 3 sets of high-performance computer groups, and a total asset of more than 10 million yuan. There are five research directions: 1) Genomic data mining 2) Protein sequence structure and function analysis 3) Metabolome analysis and drug design 4) Phenotype analysis and design breeding 5) Bioinformatics research and development
In May 2011, Huazhong Agricultural University established a bioinformatics center to promote the development of the bioinformatics discipline. After more than two years of construction, the center has begun to take shape, with relatively complete bioinformatics research software and hardware equipment, and has achieved outstanding results in crop genomics and animal drug discovery. On the basis of the center, Huazhong Agricultural University applied for the Agricultural Bioinformatics Key Laboratory of Hubei Province in 2013 and was officially approved in December of that year.
The laboratory has an academic team with young and middle-aged people as the main body. There are currently 60 fixed researchers and one manager, including 51 people with a doctorate. Among them, there are 12 professors, 33 associate professors, 14 lecturers and 1 experimenter. The core team was selected as the innovation group of Hubei Natural Science Foundation.
The composition of each research unit is as follows:
1) Genomic information mining: 3 professors, 8 associate professors, 3 lecturers
2) Protein sequence structure and function analysis: 2 professors, 8 associate professors, 2 lecturers
3) Metabolome analysis and drug design: 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 3 lecturers
4) Phenotype group analysis and design breeding: 3 professors, 6 associate professors, 3 lecturers
5) Bioinformatics R&D: 2 professors, 5 associate professors, 3 lecturers
The positioning of laboratory research work is mainly based on basic research and extends to basic and applied research. This laboratory will take the genome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome and phenotype of major crops, livestock and poultry and related pathogenic microorganisms in our province as the research object, aiming at the frontiers of the disciplines and integrating various "omics" technologies and information technologies. Generally, we carried out comprehensive research from five aspects including genomic information mining, protein sequence structure and function analysis, metabolome analysis and drug design, phenotype analysis and design breeding, and bioinformatics research and development. We work for in-depth interpretation of various "omics". The massive biological data generated will provide new theories, technologies and methods for animal and plant breeding, germplasm resource protection, agricultural pest and disease monitoring and prevention, and contribute to ensuring food security in our province and surrounding provinces.
